  • Sony Xperia xz premium plagued its predecessors out of the way.
  • Using latest Snapdragon 835.
  • It’s heavier  than the XZ’s.
  • It’s priced at nearly 60,000 INR

Gladly after Sony Xperia XZs (Review), Sony has now launched an even higher-end offering in India called the Xperia XZ Premium, Let’s jump right into the Sony xperia xz premium review, the phone carries a price tag of Nearly Rs. 60,000 or ($929) five times more than the Xperia XZs.

Snapdragon 835 SoC is the most recent processor that this Premium phone is using, Which makes this phone the first to feature Qualcomm’s latest and fabulous, as well as 4k HDR display, which is unquestionably the unusual move in the mobile industry taken by the Giant company Sony.

The Xperia Z5 is the predecessor to the Xperia XZ Premium. not only The XZ Premium does offer 4k display, but it was Xperia Z5 Premium which was the first phone to dispatch with a 4k display.

The pricing of Sony’s new smartphone is true to its name, and at nearly Rs. 60,000, it makes the competitors to the Phones like Samsung Galaxy S8+ and iPhone 7. It is still to see that Sony’s new offering can knock out Samsung’s flagship, But before we move on, has Sony fixed out the previous overheating problem that’s tormented Xperia flagships for the past few spans? Let’s dive into this.

Sony Xperia XZ Premium design and build quality

Sony Xperia XZ Premium build quality & design are the topic to be concerned, and the preference may vary from person to person. You wouldn’t agree on the fact that the ‘Luminous Chrome’ Finish in this handset is the most unexpected outcome that we have come across. It’s is highly reflective, and the chrome design is strangely slippery when used with one hand. This Sony Xperia XZ weighs around at nearly 190g, which is too heavier than the XZs, also feels quite thick while using or playing a game.
Sony seems to be no good at all in designing rut, and this statement Sony itself cannot refuse to commit. Chunky borders around the screen surely are not a good pick in 2017.

Build quality is excellent on the Sony Xperia XZ Premium Thanks though to a metal frame and Gorilla Glass 5 to add value at its grand. IP65 (water and dust resistance feature) is standing well on the phone as it is rated 68. We just don’t like the plastic sides, as it reduces the premium touch of this phone, this you’ll realize when you end up holding this phone after an hour or two. Placement of the buttons is fine, with the power button lying conveniently in line with your thumb and middle finger (if you’re left-handed.)

You’ll see a tab on the left for the SIM cards. For the primary SIM, you have to use a fingernail to dig out the tray. But the outer is fastened to a second hybrid-sim tray. It might be inconvenient, as it shouldn’t be a major concern unless you swap out SIMs frequently. What’s worse is that each time the handset needs a reboot you open up the tab, which is irritating if you change your microSD cards a lot.

If you have seen the physical ports on the Sony Xperia XZs, then you’ll notice the Sony Xperia XZ Premium using the same ports, so it uses USB 3.0 Type-C port at the bottom end and a 3.5mm headphones outlet on the top front, also a dedicated shutter release key on the right. The Xperia XZ Premium owns stereo speakers that face forward.

The reflective back apparently displays a Xperia logo and the NFC icon.
You’ll see a metal ring around the camera that juts out smoothly but not enough to generate an appalling bulge. Inside the box, apart from the Sony Xperia XZ Premium handset, you get a quick charge 3.0 fit charger, a stereo headset, a data cable, and a quick guide to get started with the device.

The 5.5-inch display of Xperia XZ Premium has a high 2160×3840 resolution, shifting the density to 801ppi. According to our perspective, the Samsung Galaxy S8 has a density of nearly 567ppi. Whereas this looks very engaging regarding the spec sheet, in fact, you will spend most of your time staring at the full-HD output (which is approximately 403ppi) rather than the inherent 4K. Sony assures us that the UI and all apps run at absolute-HD resolution, and it’s only when you watch a 4K video that you take full benefit of the native resolution.

This demonstrates why benchmarks identify the screen’s resolution as 1080p – the phone appears to block them from seeing and adjusting to the original resolution of the display. Executing everything at 4K every time would take massive load on battery life, which wouldn’t have been pleasant for anyone. Having stated that, this is still an outstanding smartphone display shows even at 1080p, with blade-sharp text and vibrant colors. Here Sony featuring itself as, you get to choose between color profiles, adjust the white balance, and choose whether or not to let video image betterment.

Sony Xperia XZ Premium specifications and features

The Xperia XZ Premium has updated specs, Using very competent and latest Snapdragon 835 SoC, which replaces the Snapdragon 821 still applied in many of this year’s flagships. You’ll experience the eight cores in this new chip versus four on its predecessor, but more importantly, regarding battery usage, it should be a lot more valuable and efficient, thanks to the precise fabrication process which is built on. It also supports the latest UFS 2.1 storage system, Bluetooth 5.0, Gigabit LTE modem and a Quick Charge 4.0, While the SoC might help these hallmarks. It’s conclusively up to each OEM to implement them, Including, you do get a dual-band Wi-Fi 802.11a/b/g/n/ac, USB-OTG, Bluetooth 5.0, NFC, and 4G with VoLTE. Although, there’s no wireless charging and FM radio.

The phone packs a whopping 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage, which surely would wrap up most of the time for the people. You can double up the storage using a microSD card of up to 256GB in the second SIM slot.

Sony Xperia XZ Premium scored an impressive Benchmark of 174,482 points in AnTuTu as expected, but do mark that they all ran at 1080p and not the native 4k resolution. GFXBench’s T-rex run maxed out at 60FPS. Unexpectedly Phone didn’t overheat even after a long gaming session.

Similar to the Xperia XZs, the Xperia XZ Premium runs on updated version of Android Nougat (7.11) with Sony’s own custom treatment. You’ll see preinstalled Apps for music, video, and photos, along with SonyLIV, Playstation, Lounge, News, What’s New and TV SideView. Lifelog feature allows you keep the trail on your activity including calories burnt, steps taken, etc. Some UI elements like the app switcher and notifications shade are all stock Android. Additional features like Changing the theme or Pairing the phone with a DualShock 4 controller can be used in the settings app.

So far in the Sony xperia xz premium review, we have articulated many aspect of it. Now  sit back relax and read the remaining stuff that you would likely not miss out.

Sony Xperia XZ Premium cameras, performance, and battery life

App performance and General UI is excellent, in which we didn’t handle any falter or slow-downs even after stuffing the phone with media files and apps. The Sony Xperia XZ Premium doesn’t hold the best supportive design to use on the go. As a result, the chrome finish would not help with the grip either. Call quality is sublime as well as the 4G works well, and we didn’t face any issue on call quality.

Asphalt 8 and Implosion are games we have managed to run with smooth framerates. As we have discussed the most annoying thing in this handset is that the phone needs a restart everytime you open the side tab or flap and even when you change your setting to cellular data between SIMs with the help of setting app. As Sony tells us that this was purposely put in place as a ‘security measure.’

The HDR display features a noticeably improved color gamut than those which do not have HDR displays. After testing this with some sample clips from YouTube, and we observed the Sony Xperia XZ Premium has a bit decent performance Compared to the Galaxy S8+ on display, giving slightly sharp details in the highlights.

When it comes to the Audio performance of the Xperia XZ Premium, We found that the Audio quality is equally good through headphones, with a bunch of useful enhancements like Surround Sound (VPT) and ClearAudio+ to take advantage of. Frequencies can be fine tuned with EQ presents or by setting it manually. Happily, you don’t have to worry about checking the speakers with your palms as they face forward, however, the volume seems to be not very loud.

Cameras are pretty much the same for both Xperia XZs and the Xperia XZ premium. On the back, you get a 19-MP motion eye camera with a built sensor, that lets you capture video at 960fps in a super-slow-motion effect. With slow motion, the one second’s (1s) footage can be stretchable to about five seconds which is fun to play with. The Phone also has 5-axis stabilization for the rear and front cameras, the Shutter button which can be used to launch the camera app and capture a picture by simply holding the shutter button down.

Color reproduction and the details have come out of high quality in landscapes and macros taken in daylight. You can eyes on a bit of JPEG compression artifacts when you zoom in all the way, but generally, it’s not something you’ll concern. Focusing is quick, supported very well in video recording changing between different subjects. The sensor captures a full gamut of colors at the decent level, which is accurate when capturing scenes like the setting sun. Low-light shots came pretty well with little noise, whereas details take a bit of a hit.

The primary camera on the Sony Xperia XZ premium has a whopping 13-megapixel sensor with comparably wide f’2.0 aperture which generates satisfactory results even indoors. Contrast to Xperia XZs, the overheating problem in the Xperia XZ Premium is way better while filming in 4k videos. The handset throws no Temperature warning message after the continuous ten minutes of recording, Which is a big accomplishment for Sony. Users can also switch to the more developed H.265 codec, also known as HEVC, for recording video

Battery backup has crossed over one day worth of usage, but if you watch a lot of videos, then the chances are less to run it the whole day. The Phone hit an impressive Video play time of 9 hours and four minutes, which is noticeably less than XZs and significantly less than what other flagships hold including the Galaxy S8 and S8+. Also, The Quick charge 3.0 and Quovo Adaptive charging are the accessories we get with this handset.

Verdict

As we have highlighted the heating issue that Sony has been offering for a quite long, but this smartphone plagued its predecessor out of the way. Sony Xperia XZ Premium is the direct rival to the Flagships like Samsung Galaxy s8+, iPhone 7 and HTC U11. The Sony Xperia XZ is just dominant, has a water-resistant body, excellent display, an endurable battery life and offers the impressive cameras. Its main inclination is its ergonomics and aesthetics, and the new Samsung’s smoke the Xperia in this respect. We would expect the more modern design style in Sony’s upcoming mobiles. The chrome finish might entice some consumers but isn’t practical for this world usage, and What we mean that this current color quite not fits one’s criteria, So Please look at the other color option if you’re considering buying this phone.

At the time of writing this review, the Sony Xperia XZ Premium going for a mountainous price rate of Rs. 59,990 or ($929), which is quite expensive considering that there’s only a comparatively small spec projection compared to the Xperia XZs. If Sony hopes to deliver a good number of units off the rack, then it needs to get more competitive with the price, as the Galaxy S8 would assuredly be a head turner for many people including me.

I’m using Coolpad note 3 lite. I’m now facing with a lot of issues. Battery backup is pathetic. It takes a lot of time for charging. I’m considering buying a new one.

After reading your article, I think Xperia is an interesting option to consider. I’ve used Xperia ray in the past. It had that overheating issue and battery life wasn’t impressive. Since Sony has rectified the heating issue, I think I’ll give it a try. Thanks for the info.

Thanks for the comment, Yes Sony has much improved its battery life with this handset. However, Chrome version is somewhat we do not recommend for the users because of its highly reflective back and chunky sides. Apart from this downfall, everything is decent and the handset is really performing well.

I always have a huge interest in the cameras in the mobiles. Because I take a lot of photos, but when you go to theatre, dinner, party, etc., it can be a problem, to say not fun, to have big cameras with you.
Would you say the quality of the camera in this mobile is so good that you can use it as a small photo camera?

Hi! I was looking for a new phone since my phone contract just ended and I actually found out about the xperia xz from a video on youtube. I then researched on it and that’s how I landed on your article.
I liked how the xz premium is waterproof but as you mention the price really turns me off, I feel it feels more like a 500-700 phone.
Anyways, what are your recommendations? Was looking at the iPhone 8. What do you feel about that?
Looking forward to your reply! 🙂

Sony Xperia XZ Premium cannot take on iPhone 7 as much as we know about it. Yes, Sony is best known for its audio and camera quality and again nailed it. Overall iPhone 7 is the Beast amidst so many flagships including Samsung Galaxy s8 and s8+. We recommend buying you iPhone 7 over Xperia XZ Premium.
