There is a subtle difference between the hibernate and sleep mode, but both work the same way. I guess few people would have ever used the hibernate mode, but Sleep is the norm among people, as we can also relate it to our sleep functions. The fact is computers can sleep, hibernate, and shutdown, depending on what the operator is up to.
As we know, computers are subservient; they do not complain of what the operator commands. So, It’s up to people that how they save power, especially when the power adapter is not plugged in.
It’s doesn’t matter which mode you choose, they all come with some sort of disadvantages and advantages, so let’s dig through knowing them.
Sleep vs. Hibernate
- Sleep – The sleep mode sends your pc to the low-power state, keeping the PC’s state in Memory while shutting down the other parts so that they can’t use any power. It clasps backs to life after you tap on the power button or open the lid up, without having you to boot up. Your previous apps or any running tasks will be right where you left off.
- Hibernate – In Hibernate mode, The PC is saving its current state to a disk rather than that of Memory. Hibernate mode requires a boot-up, but draws a shutdown amount of power, though taking a bit longer to resume than the Sleep. Hibernate mode needs to retrieve the files back to the Memory from the hard drive, allowing you to come back to the saved data or re-using programs and the documents in the current state.

When To hibernate or Sleep,
It depends, many people leave their PC running 24/7, while others don’t even consider using Sleep and hibernate modes, but also not using the shutdown mode conveniently.
- When to use Sleep mode: As the name suggests, Sleep mode comes into a role when a user decides to walk away from a laptop for a while so he can give himself rest or any reason can fit in. For how much time the Laptop should be in sleep mode is depends on battery life. If the power adapter snapped in, then the time shouldn’t bother you. The sleep state is quite an energy efficient compared to when you leave your Laptop up and running.
- When to use Hibernate mode: This mode is way better than sleep mode in terms of power-saving. Hibernate is slower to be resumed in PC, so you can use it when planning to take a nap or stepping away from it for a bit longer. If time is a matter of concern, then you can drop the idea of using this mode instead use sleep mode. With hibernate mode, you save much power, but when you shut down or hibernate your pc, you may have to wait a little longer, resuming your data.
The power that is fetched through Sleep and the hibernate mode controls by the PC. Some people don’t require using hibernate mode, because, for them, the sleep mode works like a charm if the Pc has charger on. It’s worth noting that, the sleep state may be slower than hibernate, but it just uses a few watts of power and is quick to respond.
It’s not that you don’t need a hibernate mode at all. The fact is, This mode can save you tons of power when no charging adapter is in place. It may have a bit slow-going process, but bearing power in mind, it is still something we can’t ignore.
